Biogenics Therapy by Lactic Fermentation Products

Pasteurized Lactic Drinks also have Health Effects

The effects of feeding pasteurized lactic acid bacteria drink (Calpis sour milk) on longevity and transplantable tumor of mice were studied. The diet containing 14% sour milk, or the diet containing 1.6% whole milk powder or the control diet throughout their life from 4 weeks of age. The average life span of the control group, whole milk group and sour milk group was 89.9, 84.4 and 91.8 weeks, respectively. The average life span of the sour milk group was 8% longer than that of the control group, while the average life span of the whole milk group was the same as that of the control group (Fig. 5).
This finding indicated that feeding sour milk prolonged the life span of mice. The prolongation of the average life span was considered to be a result of the preventive effect of sour milk on death caused by some disease. Pasteurized sour milk used in this experiment is Calpis sour milk, that was fermented pasteurized skim milk for a few days with lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. These results suggested that the component(s) of starter cells or the fermented product(s) was responsible for life span of mice.

Then, the effect of sour milk on tumor was studied. Female ICR mice of 6 weeks of age were intraperitoneally inoculated with Ehrlich ascitis tumor cells. Feeding pasteurized sour milk or pasteurized starter cells inhibited the growth of tumor cells. The inhibitory effect was dependent on the dose of the starter cells: higher inhibitory effect was observed in the mice administered with cells of 109/ml than those administered with 108 cells/ml or 107cells/ml.

These results suggested that some component(s) of starter cells was responsible for inhibition of tumor cell proliferation. Furthermore, no appreciable difference in the effect could be seen between viable cells and heat-killed ones.(Fig. 6) In that time, I proposed a new concept "biogenics".
